Though crime nationally continues a downward trend, you wouldn’t know it based on the headlines. Every weekend incidents of gun violence and mass shootings are splashed across the pages of newspapers and websites nationwide.
Just a few weeks ago:
-
- In Baltimore, a shooting at an outdoor gathering left one person dead and seven others injured;
Outside a courthouse in Elizabethtown, Kentucky, two individuals lost their lives and one more was injured; - In Jackson, Mississippi, a bar dispute escalated into a shooting that resulted in one death and five injuries; and
- In Minneapolis, four children were wounded in an exchange of gunfire between two vehicles, illustrating the often indiscriminate nature of these events.

Yes, FBI statistics show crime broadly—particularly violent crime—is down region to region including in major metropolitan areas. And according to the Gun Violence Archive, gun violence specifically is also in the midst of a 4-year downward cycle. However, since August 20, from small towns like Antioch, Tennessee and Euclid, Ohio to big cities like Houston and Philadelphia there have been more than 25 mass shootings resulting in more than 20 dead and nearly 110 injuries.

Though some numbers may suggest otherwise, mass shootings remain a troublesome threat—especially during the summer months. As we’ve discussed before, when the weather is warmer and the days are longer tensions are higher and opportunities abound.
Given the persistent risk of mass shootings, increased preparedness is crucial. While you may not be a target, the motivations behind these shootings can be complex and varied, ranging from personal disputes to broader societal issues that can put bystanders in jeopardy.
Individuals need to remain vigilant with a focus on situational awareness, understanding their surroundings and taking proactive steps to enhance their safety. And communities need to work together to address the root causes of violence, advocate for effective policies, and support initiatives aimed at reducing gun-related incidents to create safer environments for all.
